Hangin’ with tea nerds

June 2nd, 2007 by tonyfury

My work social club went to Ya-Ya Teahouse on friday night. It’s, as the name suggests, a place that specialises in tea. I just went along for something to do. I’m not a tea-drinker at all. In fact you could probably count the number of cups of tea I’ve had on one hand - literally. But I thought I’d go along and try some (hopefully) interesting teas and maybe find something I like.

The Tea House is pretty cool. There’s a Japanese zen garden outside, which would probably be a nice place for a cuppa on a sunny afternoon. Inside its pretty open but there are several areas including a raised tatami mat area.

The tea house is run by an American woman and her German partner, who is slightly receeding and has waist length dreadlocks (blonde) - nice.

I had no idea there was such science behind brewing tea. You’ve get the temperature right, heat your utensils, not remove too much oxygen from the water, infuse for just the right amount of time. Apparently there are debates about whether it is ok to heat water to above the required temp and then cool it down, or whether you are best to just heat it up to the right temp. All very complicated.

Teabags are an abomination to these guys. At one stage one of our group asked about using a microwave and the guy made some comment about that method being highly appropriate to use with teabags (hrmphf) - funny stuff.

These guys only deal with real tea. None of that herbal stuff. All types of real tea come from the same plant, but the different types are determined by the way they are processed. Eg whithered or not before drying, etc.

Anyway, here are a few classic quotes from the evening. For effect you should read them out loud with a German accent.

“The other week we received out shipment of second-flushing darjeeling and when I opened it the smell just blew my mind”

“People ask me why would spend the all that extra money to get Pu-erh tea and I say ‘cos its just worth it’”

It was a fun night. I learnt a lot and I will probably visit the tea house again. I may even buy some tea to take home!

Test Drive

April 21st, 2007 by tonyfury

I spotted a nice looking ‘94 BMW M3 last weekend while on one of my occasional circuits of the car yards. I’m not really looking to replace the Clio at the moment. I’m still enjoy driving it and I haven’t had any problems with it. However, I thought I’d go back when the car yard was open and have a closer look. I was also hoping that I’d get offered a test drive.

After a good look over I was actually more impressed than I expected to be. Its in very good nick for its age. The engine bay had been cleaned and looked mint and that big inline 6 with M-POWER emblazened on the cam cover is very cool. I asked the guy if i could take for a spin and he agreed. Whoohoo! That car is grunty! 280 horse-power. I floored it in 2nd and things happened so quickly I didn’t even have time to look at the speedo. I just did a quick lap round the park but it was enough to realise that its a seriously quick car. I would be awesome on a nice twisty road.

Back at the dealer I asked about the number of previous owners. The guy brought out the papers and told me there had been 8 previous owners. i had a look at the list and noticed that back in 200 it had been “owned” by New Zealand Insurance. There was no extra information, but as far as i know if a car is owned by an insurance company it means its had a claim made on it and that the insurance company has written it off, paid out the owner and become the new owner. This happens when the cost of repair is uneconomical relative to the value of the car. So for a car that would have been worth in the vicinity of $60k back then, this would been a significant repair! This really put me off. Oh yeah, but i wasn’t seriously considering now, was I :)
I’ve reverted back to my original stance of “not really looking to replace the clio”. But, should I be looking to replace it an M3 would definitely be on the candidate list. Well, one with a less questionable history anyway

Easter

April 5th, 2007 by tonyfury

So, it’s Easter tomorrow. That means Easter eggs, chocolate in various other forms, hot cross buns, rabbits and, oh yeah, some religious mumbo-jumbo. Well, I can’t shed much light on the eggs and the rabbits but I thought I’d write a bit about the religious side of things.

The story goes like this… Jesus was in Jerusalem with his followers at the time of the Passover festival. (That’s why the date of Easter moves around. It moves with the date of the Passover festival, which follows the Jewish calender.) One of his followers betrayed him to the Jewish religious leaders. They were jealous of him for a variety of reasons and conspired to have him put to death, by crucifixion. Jesus died on a cross amongst a pair of criminals even though he had done nothing wrong. On the third day after his death and burial he rose from the dead and was seen alive by over 500 people over a period of several days. He then ascended into heaven.

That’s very much a cut down version. You can read the full account in any of the “gospels” in the Bible - Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. In Matthew it’s in chapters 26 to 28. If you don’t have a Bible, try http://www.biblegateway.com/

Most people know at least some aspects of this story, but what most people miss is the significance it has for everyone.

In Romans 3 verse 23 it says “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” This means that because of the wrong things we do or have done we can’t have a relationship with God. This is a bad thing because God created us to have a relationship with him. However, because he is holy (perfect) our sins separate us from him. The good news (thats why its called Good Friday) is that when Jesus died on the cross it wasn’t a defeat. He was actually fulfilling the task given to him by God.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3 v 16

“For Christ (Jesus) also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God” 1 Peter 3 v 18
Thats right, when Jesus died he was taking the punishment for all the wrong things we have done. And because of this we are now able to have the relationship with God that was originally intended. We no longer have to be separated from God.
Why was Jesus able to do this? This is explained in 2 Corinthians 5 v 21, which says “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Because Jesus lived a perfect life and never sinned he was able to take on the punishment for our sins. Also the fact that he is the son of God is important.
Just a few more verses…
“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord” Romans 6 v 23
The work that Jesus did is a free gift that is available to everyone, but in order to get the benefit of that gift we have to accept it.
“…if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10 v 9
To accept the gift all you have to do is accept the authority Jesus has over your life and believe that he really did overcome the effect of sin in our lives (shown by the fact that he rose from the dead).
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that we also have the option of rejecting this gift, but if someone chooses to do this they will ultimately have to deal with the penalty of their sins on their own. This penalty lasts for eternity.
I hope this has been helpful and informative. Its probably raised lots of other questions. I’ll try to cover some topics that stem from this in future posts.

Out of the stone age…

March 20th, 2007 by tonyfury

A couple of exciting technology developments:

1. Got a new Apple MacBook: 2Ghz Core Duo, 1Gb RAM, … very nice.

2. Finally got a broadband connection. 2mbps, which is a nice improvement on 56k dialup. Whoohoo!

And now for something completely different…

February 25th, 2007 by tonyfury

Tired of those boring movies where everything makes sense? Want to combine all your favourite genres into one movie? Got a special interest in grandfathers who can through firewood a really long way? Boy, have I got the movie for you.

“The Happiness of the Katakuris” is about a family who, for a variety of reasons, move to the country to open a B&B near a major highway, that doesn’t yet exist, in the quest for true happiness.  What better way to tell such a heart-warming yarn than by combining normal dramatic movie techniques with sci-fi, horror, clay-mation and of course regular broadway musical-style scenes? I’m not kidding! Oh, and did I mention its in Japanese?

Without giving too much away, every guest that comes to stay ends up dying. The family decides its better to just hide the bodies and avoid the negative publicity.

My favourite scene would have to be the one where a clay-mation alien creature emerges from a bowl of soup. As the terrified Okyaku-sama screems, the alien rips out her heart-shaped uvula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palatine_uvula) which he then flies away with! Nice.

My favourite character? Hmm, thats a bit tricky. I have two.
Richard Sagawa: The half Japanese, half British son of an illegitimate member of the British Royal Family who is a pilot in the US Air Force. He is not a native Japanese speaker and to emphasise his point he has the most hilarious accent. If you can imagine Elvis or John Wayne speaking Japanese, you’re on the right track :)
Shizue Katakuri: The eldest daughter of the family. She has a problem that she “falls in love very easily”. She has some great musical numbers including one where she finishes up lying on the ground with lots of people giving her funny looks. Nothing unusual I guess. She’s also very cute.

Want to know more? You know you do:

Killer bees

February 25th, 2007 by tonyfury

Ok, it might have been a normal bee or more likely a wasp, but I got stung on my way to work on Wednesday. I was biking along when I felt a sort of scratching that got quickly more painful. I looked down and saw a little yellow and black critter nestled in the fold of my t-shirt apparently doing his best to hurt me. He did a good job!

How shocking!

February 25th, 2007 by tonyfury

Not long after I moved into my house, about a year and a half ago, the light fitting in the spare room started making sizzling noises and showering sparks! I removed the whole light fitting because it was a disaster waiting to happen. We put a lamp into the room, which doesn’t get used a whole lot, and since then the wires have just been sticking out of the ceiling without anything connected.

A few weeks ago we got a flatmate. So last weekend, before he moved in, I thought I should get a new light fitting for his room. After picking a stylish looking item (with a stylish 20% discount!) I set about installing it. I’m not an electrician but its only 3 wires right, so I thought I should at least have a go at doing it myself. I made sure the switch on the wall was off and began. I made the physical attachment to the ceiling and then started on the wires. There was a lot of stuff to squeeze into the little cup that fits against the celing. On the first attempt it ended up not fitting very nicely, so I decided to have another go. I had to remove the phase and neutral wires to re-arrange things, but I was able to leave the earth in place. I got it sorted but thought I should try it out before reconnecting the wires. I moved the cup up towards the ceiling and the next thing I knew there was a flash above me and a pop from the switch board in the hallway! I didn’t feel anything but the realisation came to me that somehow the wires were live. I checked the switch board and the other lights in the house and found that the light circuit fuse had blown. I wasn’t really sure what had happened. Obviously the phase wasn’t live cos the switch was off. Could you get current from neutral to earth? Did I know anything about electricity? Would i have to hand back my electrical engineering degree?

Anyway, with the fuse blown I figured I was safe to complete the job, which I did. I then went out ot get some fuse wire (old skool fuses bro!). When I got back I made sure the light switch for the new light was still off and then replaced the fuse. To my surprise, an eerie glow came from the spare room. I tried the switch only to find that it was actually fitted UPSIDEDOWN in the wall!!! So, up was infact ON not OFF!!!! So, I had been merrily handling live wires without a care in the world! I can’t believe I got away with this without even the slightest shock. Electrocution aside, if I’d gotten even a small shock it could easily have knocked me off the chair I was standing on, with a fine selection of gnarly landing zones such as an old clothes drier, my brothers guitar amp, the drum kit or a range of other pointy things below me.

Just another item to add to my list of “near misses” God has saved me from :)

Lesson learned: always remove the fuse when handling house wiring!

Oh, that’s cute

February 11th, 2007 by tonyfury

Ok, so I’m Coffee House with Webster the other night. It’s a warm evening and we’re sitting outside. The place is fairly busy, lots of people around.

The waitress comes over to us and asks if she can take our order. I ask for a hazelnut milkshake and a piece of citrus slice. She asks if I’d like yoghurt on the citrus slice. I say “Yes please”. Then she turns to Webster and asks what he’d like. He say’s “I’m gonna have something very similar. I’ll have a vanilla milkshake and a piece of citrus slice with yoghurt.” To which the waitress replies, in her wierd scottish/irish/southland/american accent “Ohhh, that’s cute”!!!!!! Webster and I exchange looks of horror as we realise the implication of her statement and I quickly respond “Um, no that’s not cute”. [JaseBase has a momentary flashback to role call in science class with Mr Boreboom in 4th form.] What is up with that?? Can’t two guys meet up at a cafe for a chat without people making all sorts of very incorrect assumptions about them? What is the world coming to? It’s not like we were ordering slices of quiche or open-topped sandwiches or anything!
Anyway, we had bit of a laugh about it. But the fun wasn’t over. A different waitress brought out our order and gave us really funny looks and had a bit of a smirk on her face. It seems there may have been a bit of dicussion going on in the kitchen.

And what does this mean for my prospects of meeting a nice girl? Are they all looking at me and saying “Forget about him, I saw him having coffee with a guy!” Agghh!

Nice short week

February 8th, 2007 by tonyfury

It was Waitangi Day on Tuesday. Almost everyone in my team at work was taking the Monday off too, so I thought I’d join in the fun and have a 3-day week. Much to everyone’s surprise the weather has been distinctly and appropriately summery lately. Monday and Tuesday were no exception. I can’t say I actually did very much but I did manage to go mountain biking both days. On monday my bro and I went out to Bottle Lake. We go there quite often, which is good because we’ve gotten to know the track well and that means you can just focus on going as fast possible and enjoying the turns and starwars-like sections with narrowly spaced trees.

On Tuesday (after a long period meditating on the treaty and its great significance to our day to day lives) we headed to the Port Hills. Its been a while since I last went there. Its just a bit more of a hassle to get there and you need more time cos the tracks are longer so we don’t get up there so often. There was a light breeze, which was nice for cooling you down on the long climb up Rapaki. I’m pleased to report that my uphilling has improved quite a lot. A credit to the gym program I’ve been on, I think. We went down Bowenvale, which I haven’t done for ages! The track has changed heaps due to erosion. In some places I reckon the track is a good 20cm lower than it used to be. This has exposed some pretty large rocks and turned it from a fairly smooth trail into a pretty technical one (well for me anyway). It was really good fun and I only walked a few sections.

Oh yeah, the other thing I did was more painting. Aside from a few touch ups in some places, I think I’m done. About time too! I started just after Christmas. Anyway, it looks good (i think). I’ll put some pictures up soon and you can see if you agree. It was all white before so this is quite an improvement.
